Riding, mountains, water, museums — what an afternoon here can actually be spent on. Where I have been myself, the price is the one I handed over. Where I have not, the price is what the place advertises, and it says so. They are also on the map, next to the coffee.
Mountain forest without the mountain — a birch grove inside the city that turns white-on-gold in the second half of October.
The grove is inside the Ile-Alatau national park zone and there is an ecopost at the entrance — bring cash for the park fee. The autumn colour is a narrow window, roughly the second half of October.
An hour on well-kept horses in the hills by the Park of the First President — close enough to treat as a city outing, with a stretch of the route open for a canter.
I have not been. This is from the same friend as the Almaty Hills and Western KZ notes — she rode here, rates the horses and the organisation, and put the views just short of Almaty Hills. The price is hers to recall; check it when you book.
Well-kept horses and foothill country an hour out of Almaty — a two-hour ride, or a trek that keeps you in the saddle for days.
I have not been. This comes from a friend who rides regularly and has done one of their day treks; the praise for how the horses are kept is hers. The prices are her recollection and already a little old — confirm with the club before you count on them.
Opera and ballet in the 1941 building at the heart of the Golden Square — including Abai, a Kazakh opera, sung with English subtitles.
Written from the theatre's own site, not from a night in the stalls. Ticket prices are not published there and vary by show and seat — Ticketon has the current ones.
An hour of eagles, vultures and a falcon at 320 km/h, performed in English by a breeding centre that also releases gyrfalcons back into the wild.
I have not been. Everything here comes from the centre's own site and its price list, read on 27 August 2026 — including the claim that the birds are not mistreated.
Padel indoors until one in the morning, with a cafe and a yoga studio in the same room — in a city that only just got courts for it.
I have not played here. Everything below is from the club's own site and public offer and from its 2GIS listing, all read on 30 August 2026 — including the opening hours.
An hour and a half of genuine beauty without leaving the city — a hundred hectares of collected trees rather than a park with flowerbeds.
Closed on the first Monday of every month for cleaning — the same kind of rule that catches people out at the Kasteyev. The ticket desk also breaks from 15:00 to 15:30.
Not every afternoon needs a plan or a ticket. The Central Park — still called Gorky Park by everyone — has a lake, funfair rides and, tucked in among the trees, a set of clay tennis courts that have been in use for decades. The smaller square named for Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova, two Kazakh soldiers made Heroes of the Soviet Union, is the quieter option: a bench, tall trees, and nothing being asked of you.
